Penang Taxi Services

Penang's outstanding beaches and exotic sights have made it one of the most popular destinations in the region. Take a walking tour of historic downtown Georgetown, visit the Penang Museum or take the ferry across to the mainland to explore the beautiful land and take a look into its fascinating history and culture. Visit the Snake Temple, the Kek Lok Si Temple, Wat Chayamangkalaram Siamese Temple or the Dhammikarama Burmese Buddhist Temple.

Taxis are easily and widely available around the island. It is the most common means of getting around by visitors. But bear in mind that most of the taxis in Penang don’t use meters, so be sure to agree on a price first before boarding the taxi. Start by asking how much it is to get to your destination; you can negotiate on the prices quoted if you feel that they are too high. Taxis normally charge between RM4.00 - RM7.00 for short distances within the city. Still, if they are the only option available, you need to do some negotiation with the driver before climbing on board. What the taxis do is determine a fixed rate for most journeys. Most taxi drivers agree to honor this rate. Hence even if you ask a few taxis, you are likely to be given the same price which they have agreed among themselves.

In an effort to enhance the professionalism of taxis in Penang, many have started to use the meter - previously resisted by many of the taxis citing a wide range of reasons and excuses. Always choose a taxi that uses a meter. You can find these with a sticker on their door.

Taxi stands are not as common as bus stops in Penang. Also, taxis are not as ubiquitous on the streets in Penang than they are in other major cities.

As taxi rides can be much more expensive than taking the bus, you should carefully evaluate the options before calling the taxi. On the other hand, taxis provide the convenience of traveling from point to point, and for transporting of luggage.
